2. Why might developing sexuality lead to the beginning of a "conscious life" (10)? How do these developments of sexuality and a conscious life affect one's stance in the conflict between comfort/security and independence/freedom?
Developing sexuality leads to a beginning of a conscious life since during puberty, development of brain occurs in addition to sexuality. This stage in development of people is the most significant change, so this shows how developing sexually leads to a beginning of a conscious life. Sexuality is considered a taboo while consciousness can also be considered a taboo. Sexuality strays from how parents keep kids in security, safety, and innocence. This applies with consciousness too since parents tell their kids what they think is best for them, and the kids accept to be comfortable and secure. However when consciousness develops (which is typically while sexuality develops), kids are compelled to be more reckless and are able to challenge established ideas and be skeptical. This strays from comfort and security to independence and freedom. How far a kid strays from security and safety differs from person to person, but the vast majority of people stray to independence and freedom at least a little bit. So when one develops sexually and consciously, one strays from comfort and security at least a little bit. It only not happens when people are forced to have it not happen, however it's a development of the mind and it's still there, just not shown on the outside.
I agree that when someone develops sexuality and the other thing associated with puberty, the person will have a stronger inclination to stray from security.
The developing of sexuality leads to the beginning of a "conscious life" because you begin to understand things about yourself and you shape your views of the world. It is an awakening in yourself that makes you have other epiphanies about yourself as well. It is like a chain process. When you develop sexuality and a conscious life, you decide your views on things. Decisions between comfort/security and independence/freedom are affected by the developing of your "conscious life" and opinions. But I do agree with Fahrawn on the fact that the developing of sexuality and a "conscious life" does make one stray away from their comfort/security. These developations may be uncomfortable and may make people realize that they don't want comfort and security as much as independence/freedom.
I agree with your opinion on what a "consious life" means but I think that it could either make you want more independence/freedom OR comfort/security based on the experiences. An example of this would be how when Janie becomes "conscious" she wants more freedom and independence which is the opposite of what her grandmother wants for her because of her negative experiences of being raped.
As children, sexuality means nothing. When people begin to grow up, however, it starts to help dictate the way we interact with others and builds a stronger consciousness of who we are. I thought Fahrawn's comment was really interesting, especially about sexuality being different from the way parents keep kids safe and innocent, and the part about the brain developing. I like the idea of looking at this from a more scientific point of view, and not simply as a mental sort of idea. Fahrawn talks about how sexuality is the way a son or daughter strays away from their parents. When a kid hits puberty, it's usually the same time people start saying, "Oh look how grown up you are!" and your parents say, "You're growing up too fast!" We roll our eyes at that, but parents are having this realization that they don't have a little kid anymore, they have a teenager who is quickly becoming an adult. For some parents, this makes them feel like they need to make their child even more constricted and secure. Others give up and let their child do whatever they want. Sexuality is the opposite of the security of parents, however, it can lead to security. As teenagers develop sexually, it's one more step toward being an adult. As many people start to feel like they are adults before their brains are fully developed, they want to be independent and fend for themselves. Security seems less important. As individuals, as teens gain sexuality, they conduct themselves differently, or gain their consciousness. They realize that, like for Janie under the tree, they see things differently. They become more self-aware and can be either more careful or more carefree in their actions and the way they treat others. Many teens could feel so self-conscious and terrified of the upcoming future and adulthood that they feel like a child trapped in an some-what adult body. This could make them too aware. This kind of person, the one who is scared of their future and sees it looming in front of them, could yearn for more security and want to deny the fact that they are growing up. This denial makes it harder for them to grow up because they are so focused on the comfort that they live in and are not prepared for independence.
Developing sexuality can lead to the beginning of a more conscious life because it opens you up to a whole new world. As a child, you are raised to feel parental and familial love, a love that is forever and unconditional. But as a person passes into this new threshold. they grow older and become curious of this whole other world they have heard of but never been introduced to, they have experiences they have never had before. Amongst these are the new feelings of love, or infatuation rather. They experience this new feeling of "love" for a person they had never "loved" before, but the reality is that it's not love. It's infatuation and desire and ventures into the unknown. Janie's grandmother is all too aware of this, and on one hand she wants to protect her 16 year old granddaughter from making the wrong decisions early in life, much as her mother had (running away from her child), but on the other hand she knows that there isn't much she can do besides giving Janie advice and hoping that she takes it. This is the role of any guardian to protect the child that they raised. To protect them from any harm or sadness. They know that they cannot protect the child forever, but the longest amount of time they can is sufficient. I agree with Joanna that it is natural for a child to rebel against the words of a guardian, because it isn't what they want to hear. It doesn't fit the fairytales they were told as children about love. It's the truth that they are scared of, and the fear shows that the child isn't really ready for this new world that they have been tricked into.
When we are kids, sexuality is nonexistant. Nobody judged how you acted, but as we grow up some of the stuff that people do when they are kids becomes immature and socially unacceptable. Instead of being those two crazy kids holding hands on the playground, you have to think about your actions. You can't just do whatever you want anymore, your life becomes "conscious." Like Joanna said, This conscious way of living can both hold someone back from finding themselves, or lead them to that self discovery. If one is too conservative and is scared to move past their thoughts then they are going to be held back by the conscious way of life and stay in the comfort and protection side. But if they push through the thought and go beyond it, they will eventually find themselves. For some people going beyond their conscious thought would be going towards sexuality.
Developing sexuality leads to a "conscious life" because a person suddenly becomes interested in things that will take away their innocence and mark their passage from child to adult. They become moer awar of things that before they did not pay much attention to such as an attraction to the oppsite gender, sex, their sexual orientation, and the want to defy thier paernts who ahve done nothing but provide a stabel adn comforatbl shleter for them. These new things that a developing person now sees are things that one parents or guardian or whoever raised them does not approve of because they see it as a dangerous thing that could cause the person to make a decision that they will forever regret. The want to do as the person pleases causes them to side with independence and freedom because they do not yet realize the luxaries that shelter and safety bring to a person life. As time passses and the newly developed person makes thier own mistakes and grows on thier own they will eventually switch sides of the arguement adn realize that having independence and freedom is not all it is cracked up to be and that if they ever want to ahve their own family or have people rely on thrm then they cannot stick to the idea of freedom and independence is the way to go.
As you grow up you discover yourself, what type of person you are, and try to exemplify your best qualities. During this process, some people discover that their sexual orientation may differ from the majority of their friends and family and wonder what is wrong with them. As you develop sexuality and puberty as you grow up you begin to realize how much more there is to the world than you thought before. You start discovering new things and learn that it was always all aroudn you but you just never noticed it as much. This "conscious life" is the knowledge that you obtain and discover with maturity. Once someone discovers the unknown of sexuality they might start to wonder what else if out there in this world that they haven't experienced. This type of person wants to discover as much as they can and be free and independent. This is only if their experiences with love and sexuality are good and exciting. For those who have had negative experiences with love and sexuality they might rather security and comfort than discovering the unknown which might cause them even more harm. Knowing and discovering sexuality and becoming conscious can either lead to one desiring more freedom vs security based on their experiences.
"Consciousness" can be defined as knowing what is around you, or in this case, being an adult. Developing sexuality and discovering sexuality has to do with puberty, which is literally the transition into an adult life. In this way, discovering sexuality and developing sexuality directly leads to a conscious life because it correlates with puberty. Developing sexuality also leads to a conscious life because it opens your mind up to new ideas that you hadn't thought of before. As you develop your sexuality, you see that there is a lot to the world that you had never seen before; hence a more "conscious life." The general transition from innocence to experience is brought about when someone develops their sexuality and other traits of puberty. Once you see these new ideas, you are tempted to leave the security you have always known and venture out into a world of more independence where you can explore these new ideas. This idea goes along with the general trend that once a person hits puberty, he or she becomes "rebellious" and wants to be independent to think and act for himself/herself.
Sexuality is the most obvious part of growing up. Before adolescence, there are fewer distractions and interests that cause a desire for independence. When puberty arrives, sexuality creates a reason to want to rebel. Sexuality is very basic, going back millions of years. Therefore, it is one of the most natural distractions. Sexuality and the desire to reproduce are the key reason for young animals leaving their parents. Teenagers want to rebel, and sexuality is so recognizable and universal that it allows a way to rebel against authority without necessarily committing a legal or moral crime. Sexuality creates a drive for independence, providing a reason to leave comfort and the security of one's home.
The idea of a universal symbol for rebellion interests me, but I disagree on that, we as teenagers don't always flock to sexuality necessarily for rebellion, sometimes teenagers go to other things like talking back to their parents, wearing bad clothes, and other things that don't necessarily involve sexuality.
As a small child, we have absolutely no idea about sexuality or relationships or anything like that. We are simply focused on the task at hand, our minds do not stay focused on one thing for too long and we seem very hyper in that way, always bouncing off of things and going in between in rapid trains of thought. When we stop being defined as children is right around the time we start developing sexuality. Sexuality can lead to a ‘conscious’ life in the way that when you start developing sexuality, you become aware of what you’re doing. You don’t want to do something stupid that may affect the image that others have of you, you want to try and make yourself always appear in the best light either through mannerisms our outward appearance, and you begin to play your good traits and try to hide the ones that you think are bad. You begin to think about a lot more complex problems then a child would, and it comes through in an average conversation, with somewhat deeper humor and topics (this may or may not apply to some but I’ve found it to be the case). In this way, yes sexuality leads to a conscious life. However, when developing sexuality it also leads to the teenager idea of rebellion, usually again one’s parents. This may sway you to the side of independence and freedom.
